You’re right: models like Newton’s sometimes sound like the “soul” and the “human self” are two separate beings. The way I see it, they’re not separate at all, but two levels of the same consciousness — the soul as the larger awareness, and the human as the focused expression inside the experience. Free will happens within that shared identity, not apart from it.

And your second point is even bigger:
Why any separation? Who set up the learning system? What’s the end goal?
These are the questions most regression-based models describe but don’t fully explain. They’re the same questions mystics, philosophers, and even NDE experiencers grapple with across traditions.

1. The “soul” his crafted a contract before our arrival here and yet free will lets “us” choose the specific path on earth. This makes it sound like two separate entities: The Soul and Us. This causes confusion for me. For example, if I decide I need to learn algebra, I attend math class, pay attention, study hard, and pass the tests so I learn algebra. I know what I need to do and I do it. I don’t go to school and then dick around. Or if I do, it’s because somebody ELSE has decided I need to learn algebra and I don’t really care. So what is this separation/disconnect between soul and us as humans?

2. And perhaps the bigger question: who are we that we have become disconnected from Source/God/Divine to begin with and even need to learn lessons at all and evolve back to reconnecting with Source? What happened that we became separated in the first place and who is running the curriculum to reunite/monitoring the karmic progress? Where are all these new younger souls coming from and why are we so ignorant? And what is the endgame? That each of us reunites with the collective consciousness… and then…dissolves…into unity? Then what? And how does this individual soul-as-entity-who-needs-to-learn mesh with other spiritual traditions’ concepts that we are all One and that the self-as-individual is just an illusion?

Again, great post and great idea. These are just questions I continually have that never seem to get addressed in these kinds of thought experiments. Which subsequently makes it hard for me to latch on to these ideas because they don’t seem to holistically cover the entire WHY of it all.
