Daniel Kahneman: The insult comes from confusing two claims. One claim is: you are not conscious of the causes of many of your choices. That is true. The other claim is: therefore you have no responsibility or ability to influence your behavior. That is not what follows. System 2 can set rules, create habits, build environments, and notice when stakes are high. But if we imagine System 2 as the constant author of life, we create a mythology that makes us overconfident and careless.
Krista Tippett: Let’s press into the feeling of confidence, then—the inner voice that says, “I know.” What is the single biggest illusion the fast mind creates that makes us overtrust our judgment, and why does the slower mind usually let it slide?
Jonathan Haidt: I’d name it moral certainty. The sense that our judgments arrive with a glow of obviousness—especially about people. We feel we see character, intention, goodness, threat. That glow is intoxicating. And the rider isn’t built to question the elephant’s immediate moral reaction; it’s built to justify it. So we become eloquent defenders of our first impressions.
Michael Gazzaniga: I’d frame it as the illusion of a unified self. We feel like there’s one “me” deciding. But our brain is a patchwork of processes. When a decision occurs, the interpreter claims it for the self and smooths out contradictions. That smoothing is the illusion. You don’t “will” your way into wisdom; you construct conditions where wiser choices are more likely.
Michael Gazzaniga: I’m going to be blunt: responsibility is a social contract. We hold people accountable because societies require predictability and repair. David Eagleman: Practically, responsibility becomes “What systems did you set up?” Did you put guardrails around your predictable weaknesses? Did you create friction for your worst impulses and ease for your best ones? The point isn’t to be perfectly in control in the moment—the point is to be strategic about the moments you won’t be.
Daniel Kahneman: Yes. The responsible self is not the self that claims perfect authorship. It is the self that knows when not to trust itself. That’s the key. Topic 2 — Bias Isn’t a Bug — Why Intelligence Makes Us More Blind

A different room now: brighter, more public. A long oak table with microphones that aren’t plugged in—symbols more than tools. On the wall behind them: a simple whiteboard with two words written neatly: “CERTAINTY” and “CURIOSITY.” Someone has underlined CERTAINTY twice.
Ezra Klein: Let’s not waste time flattering ourselves. We’re surrounded by smart people who are confidently wrong—some of them are leading institutions. So here’s where I want to start: If we can name our biases, why don’t we change? What keeps the bias intact at the moment of choice?
Daniel Kahneman: Knowledge is not a vaccine. Biases are not simply errors in reasoning; they are features of how the mind economizes effort. When you are making a judgment, the fast system produces an answer. That answer arrives with a feeling—often a feeling of rightness. System 2 would need to actively doubt it, and doubt is uncomfortable. In most circumstances, the mind chooses comfort and fluency over correction.
Daniel Ariely: I’ll add that we treat bias like a trivia fact. “Oh, anchoring exists.” But the real problem is that the bias is attached to something we want: certainty, identity, status, convenience, winning. In the moment, bias isn’t experienced as bias—it’s experienced as “common sense.” That’s why people don’t change: there’s nothing in their internal experience that screams, “This is a cognitive error.”

You can create sophisticated moral narratives to excuse yourself. You can confuse complexity with depth. And you can become so persuasive that you stop noticing you’re persuading yourself first.
Daniel Ariely: Also: smart people game systems. They’re confident they can outsmart consequences. They think the rules are for others. There’s a special kind of irrationality that comes from being clever: “I can handle it.” And then—predictably—you can’t. It’s like watching people who know gambling odds still make “just this once” bets because they feel exceptional.
Julia Galef: Intelligence can also increase identity lock-in. If your reputation is “the smart one,” admitting uncertainty is costly. You don’t just lose an argument—you lose status. So you unconsciously become more committed to being right. Your mind becomes an image manager. That’s not stupidity—it’s self-protection.
Daniel Kahneman: I would add overconfidence. The better you are at generating explanations, the more coherent your world feels. Coherence breeds confidence, and confidence shuts down investigation. This is a core theme in my work: we confuse the quality of a story with the quality of evidence.
Ezra Klein: So we’ve built a bleak picture: biases survive knowledge, and intelligence can make them worse. Now the practical turn—the part people always ask for but rarely want to do. If debiasing is hard individually, what interventions reliably reduce error in real life? Teams? Checklists? Incentives? Time delays? Accountability? What actually works?
Daniel Kahneman: I want to disappoint people gently: there is no universal cure. But there are strong tools in specific contexts. The best debiasing happens when you change the environment, not the person. Use structured decision processes. Separate the generation of options from the evaluation of options. Use premortems. Use base rates explicitly. And where possible, use algorithms for prediction—because human judgment is noisy and inconsistent.
Daniel Ariely: I agree and I’ll make it more concrete. Add friction where you’re predictably impulsive. Add defaults that protect your future self. We already do this with seatbelts and automatic retirement contributions. You don’t need a better person—you need a smarter setup.
Keith Stanovich: And you need “cognitive forcing functions.” That’s the technical term. Systems that force you to slow down: requiring probability estimates, requiring you to list alternative hypotheses, requiring an explicit base-rate comparison, requiring outside-view data. Not “try harder”—but “you cannot proceed until you do these steps.”
Carol Tavris: And accountability that includes the ability to admit error without humiliation. If error is punished as shame, people hide it and double down. If error is treated as information, you can learn. The social environment determines whether minds correct or entrench.
Julia Galef: I’d add training emotional tolerance for being wrong. If your nervous system treats “I might be mistaken” like danger, you won’t update. Debiasing isn’t only cognitive—it’s emotional. Ezra Klein: Daniel, I want to circle back. Your work is famous for showing how stubborn these errors are. People sometimes read it and think, “So we’re doomed.” What would you say to that reader—someone who wants not just to understand bias, but to live differently?
Daniel Kahneman: I would say: the goal is not purity. The goal is fewer avoidable errors. If you can identify a small set of decisions that matter—health, relationships, money, ethics—and build a few reliable practices around them, your life improves. The mind will remain imperfect. But we can be less naïve about it.
Ezra Klein: That feels like the honest promise: not transcendence—just fewer disasters.

Topic 3 — Stories Beat Statistics — Why We Reject Base Rates

The better the story, the more they believe it. In politics, it becomes: one election equals a grand theory. In medicine: a memorable patient becomes a rule. In finance: a charismatic CEO becomes destiny. The antidote is painfully simple: anchor forecasts in base rates, then adjust modestly. Most people reverse that: they start with their story and adjust the base rate to fit.
Daniel Kahneman: That reversal is a classic error. It’s also why I warned about the planning fallacy. Projects are imagined from the inside: best-case sequences, optimistic obstacles. The outside view says: “What typically happens to projects like this?” In medicine, the same occurs with diagnosis: a coherent symptom story overrides statistical prevalence. So the question becomes: what systems prevent them from blowing themselves up? In fragile domains, you need rules that are robust to human storytelling—skin in the game, redundancy, limits on leverage, safeguards against tail risk. Meaning is fine. Just don’t let meaning justify ruin.
