Republicans and Democrats Unity: Lessons from Cain and Abel

August 27, 2025 by Nick Sasaki Leave a Comment

Getting your Trinity Audio player ready...

America today is deeply divided between Republicans and Democrats. The hostility feels unending, with each side treating the other as enemy rather than partner. Yet history and scripture reveal that this is not a new struggle. The ancient story of Cain and Abel teaches us the key to resolving division: Abel must love Cain, even when Cain resists or strikes.

In providential history, Abel wins not through force, but through sacrifice and forgiveness. When Abel humbly loves Cain, Cain’s heart can be melted, and unity can emerge. This is not just a biblical lesson—it is a living truth for nations, political parties, and modern leaders.

As we look at Republicans and Democrats today, the Divine Principle reminds us that true victory will not come by crushing the other side. It will come when Abel-type leaders show sacrificial love, humility, and vision—guiding both sides into unity for the sake of God and the nation.

Cain and Abel Unity: The Foundation of Substance

Moderator: Rev. Sun Myung Moon
Participants: Jesus Christ, Joseph (Genesis), Abraham Lincoln, Martin Luther King Jr., Donald Trump

Opening Question by Rev. Moon:

“Brothers, history has always required Abel to win the heart of Cain. Abel must love Cain first. Tell us, from your own lives, what is the essence of Abel’s role?”

Jesus:
“Abel must love without condition. On the cross, I showed that true power is not in the sword, but in forgiveness that reaches even one’s enemies.”

Joseph:
“My brothers betrayed me, yet when famine came, I gave them bread. Abel’s role is to turn betrayal into reconciliation.”

Lincoln:
“I believed Abel must heal, not crush. After the Civil War, my vision was with malice toward none, with charity for all.”

King:
“Abel’s role is nonviolence. By refusing to strike back, Abel reveals Cain’s conscience and awakens his humanity.”

Trump:
“Abel must stand firm in truth, but his purpose is not just to win—it is to unite a divided nation.”

Second Question by Rev. Moon:

“Abel is often attacked, misunderstood, even hated. How did you endure Cain’s hostility and remain Abel?”

Jesus:
“I prayed for my persecutors. Seeing them as lost brothers gave me strength to endure the cross.”

Joseph:
“I wept in private, but I trusted God’s greater plan. Faith transformed bitterness into compassion.”

Lincoln:
“I endured with patience. If Abel yields to resentment, he loses his mission. Only mercy could preserve the Union.”

King:
“My jail cell taught me endurance. Every blow became fuel for a fire that moved America’s conscience.”

Trump:
“I endure by standing strong, but strength must be guided by vision. Anger cannot define Abel—focus on the mission keeps me steady.”

Third Question by Rev. Moon:

“Then tell us: in today’s world of division, what must Abel actually do to melt Cain’s heart and build unity?”

Jesus:
“Teach forgiveness. Reconciliation begins when Abel forgives first.”

Joseph:
“Provide for Cain’s needs. Meeting real suffering with compassion opens the way to unity.”

Lincoln:
“Lead with justice and charity together. Abel must restore trust, not just enforce law.”

King:
“Demonstrate love in action. The world must see that love is stronger than violence or hate.”

Trump:
“Speak boldly for truth, but keep unity above pride. Abel must not aim to destroy his opponent, but to bring the whole nation together.”

Closing Reflection by Rev. Moon:

“Yes. Cain killed Abel in Genesis, but in this age Abel must love Cain until Cain’s heart melts. This is the Foundation of Substance. Republicans must love Democrats, America must love the world. Abel’s power is not in domination, but in sacrificial love. When Cain and Abel unite, God’s providence advances and the Kingdom of Heaven takes root on earth.”

Abel’s Path of Love: How to Win Cain’s Heart

Moderator: Rev. Sun Myung Moon
Participants: Jesus Christ, Joseph (Genesis), Abraham Lincoln, Martin Luther King Jr., Donald Trump

Opening Question by Rev. Moon:

“Brothers, Abel’s path is not to dominate but to love Cain. Tell us: what does it truly mean for Abel to love Cain?”

Jesus:
“To love Cain is to love without expecting return. Even on the cross, I prayed for my enemies. That is Abel’s way.”

Joseph:
“Cain’s hostility is healed when Abel offers blessing. I gave my brothers food when they deserved punishment—that love restored our family.”

Lincoln:
“Abel must show charity in victory. After the war, I sought reconciliation, not revenge. Love means restoring Cain’s dignity, not crushing it.”

King:
“Loving Cain means absorbing violence without answering in kind. Nonviolence is not weakness—it is the strength to love in the face of hate.”

Trump:
“Abel’s love is not surrender—it’s strength guided by purpose. You love Cain by protecting the nation, but also by lifting even those who attack you.”

Second Question by Rev. Moon:

“Love is easy to say, but Abel faces real hostility. How can Abel love Cain practically when Cain strikes at him?”

Jesus:
“Turn the other cheek—not in passivity, but to show Cain his own spirit. Love disarms hatred.”

Joseph:
“Provide what Cain lacks. In famine, my brothers needed bread. In giving, I broke their pride and won their hearts.”

Lincoln:
“Lead with mercy alongside justice. By pardoning rather than punishing harshly, Abel gives Cain the chance to change.”

King:
“Confront evil with love in public. When the world sees Abel’s patience under fire, Cain’s conscience begins to awaken.”

Trump:
“You stand your ground, but not with bitterness. Show Cain that your fight is for the people, even for him, not for yourself.”

Third Question by Rev. Moon:

“Then, in our divided modern world, what steps must Abel take today to truly love Cain and bring unity?”

Jesus:
“Forgive first, before Cain repents. Abel must open the door of reconciliation.”

Joseph:
“Show generosity. Meet the real needs of society, even when those who oppose you despise you.”

Lincoln:
“Speak to the better angels of human nature. Abel must appeal to conscience, not to vengeance.”

King:
“Live love, not just preach it. March, serve, and suffer for Cain’s sake until hearts are moved.”

Trump:
“Stand strong in truth, but always point to unity. Abel’s victory is not defeating Cain, but building a nation together.”

Closing Reflection by Rev. Moon:

“Yes. Abel’s mission is not easy. Cain resists, strikes, and hates. Yet Abel must never answer with the same spirit. To love Cain is to embrace him, even at cost to oneself. This is how hearts are melted. When Abel loves Cain in practice—through forgiveness, service, mercy, endurance, and vision—then God’s providence advances, and the family, the nation, and the world can be restored.”

When Abel Fails: Losing God’s Position of Leadership

Moderator: Rev. Sun Myung Moon
Participants: Jesus Christ, Joseph (Genesis), Abraham Lincoln, Martin Luther King Jr., Donald Trump

Opening Question by Rev. Moon:

“Brothers, when Abel fails to love Cain, tragedy follows. Tell us: what happens when Abel does not fulfill his role?”

Jesus:
“When Abel becomes proud or self-righteous, he loses God’s favor. The Pharisees were meant to be Abel, yet their arrogance turned them into Cain.”

Joseph:
“If I had sought revenge, my family would have perished in famine. Abel’s failure would have destroyed the lineage itself.”

Lincoln:
“When Abel punishes instead of reconciling, wounds deepen. A harsh peace would have left America broken forever.”

King:
“If Abel answers hate with hate, the cycle never ends. Violence begets violence. Abel’s failure gives Cain victory.”

Trump:
“When Abel forgets humility, he loses the people’s trust. Without trust, even truth cannot prevail.”

Second Question by Rev. Moon:

“Why is it so dangerous for Abel to become arrogant or careless?”

Jesus:
“Because Abel’s authority comes from God, not himself. Without humility, Abel becomes another Cain.”

Joseph:
“Cain already feels resentment. If Abel acts with pride, Cain’s heart hardens and reconciliation becomes impossible.”

Lincoln:
“Leadership without charity destroys unity. Abel who governs with pride becomes a tyrant, not a healer.”

King:
“Arrogant Abel loses moral authority. Once Abel mirrors Cain’s hate, no one can tell them apart.”

Trump:
“Pride blinds Abel. If I think it’s only about me, I fail my mission to unite America.”

Third Question by Rev. Moon:

“Then, what safeguards must Abel keep today, to avoid failing his mission?”

Jesus:
“Remain in prayer. Only by staying close to the Father can Abel stay pure.”

Joseph:
“Hold to forgiveness. Remembering God’s plan kept me from bitterness.”

Lincoln:
“Lead with humility. The higher the position, the greater the need for charity.”

King:
“Walk the path of love daily. Nonviolence is not strategy—it is discipline of the heart.”

Trump:
“Stay focused on the people and on God’s purpose. Abel cannot afford to fight for ego—only for the mission of unity.”

Closing Reflection by Rev. Moon:

“Yes. The danger of Abel failing is great. In history, when Abel faltered, God’s providence was delayed. Abel must never become arrogant, never answer hate with hate, never forget humility. For when Abel stands true—humble, prayerful, sacrificial—Cain can be restored, and the providence of God moves forward. But if Abel fails, history repeats the tragedy of Genesis. This is why Abel must remain vigilant, for the sake of all mankind.”

Melting Cain’s Heart: Love Stronger than Hostility

Moderator: Rev. Sun Myung Moon
Participants: Jesus Christ, Joseph (Genesis), Abraham Lincoln, Martin Luther King Jr., Donald Trump

Opening Question by Rev. Moon:

“Enemies often rise against Abel. Yet God’s will is not to destroy them, but to melt their hearts. Tell us: how did you melt the heart of your enemies?”

Jesus:
“On the cross I prayed, Father, forgive them. My love pierced the hardness of Roman soldiers and even won their faith.”

Joseph:
“I gave my brothers bread when they feared judgment. Mercy, not revenge, melted their fear into repentance.”

Lincoln:
“I chose reconciliation. After war, I spoke of healing, not vengeance. That vision melted bitterness and preserved our Union.”

King:
“Nonviolence melted hatred. When beaten, we did not retaliate. The conscience of America was stirred when enemies saw our endurance.”

Trump:
“I face hostility daily. By standing strong for the people, even critics have seen I fight for them too. Strength with love melts hearts over time.”

Second Question by Rev. Moon:

“Cain often strikes first, with violence, lies, or hatred. How did you keep your heart soft while being attacked?”

Jesus:
“I remembered the Father’s love. His love in me was greater than the hatred against me.”

Joseph:
“I wept in secret. By bringing my pain before God, I could meet my brothers with compassion instead of revenge.”

Lincoln:
“I leaned on providence. Knowing history belonged to God gave me patience to endure insults without bitterness.”

King:
“My heart stayed soft through discipline. Prayer and song kept my spirit alive even in jail.”

Trump:
“I learned not to take it personally. If I let anger rule me, Cain wins. Staying focused on the mission keeps my heart steady.”

Third Question by Rev. Moon:

“Today, nations and parties are divided. What must Abel do now to melt the heart of Cain in this modern age?”

Jesus:
“Forgive first. Forgiveness is the key that unlocks reconciliation.”

Joseph:
“Offer practical love. Meet the needs of the people—food, justice, security—and Cain will soften.”

Lincoln:
“Speak to the higher angels of human nature. Inspire, rather than condemn.”

King:
“Show love in action, not just words. Sacrifice changes hearts more than speeches.”

Trump:
“Be bold in truth, but always aim for unity. If Abel keeps fighting for everyone, even enemies will eventually respect him.”

Closing Reflection by Rev. Moon:

“Yes. Cain’s heart is cold, but Abel’s mission is to melt it with love, endurance, and sacrifice. To destroy the enemy is easy; to melt his heart is divine. This is the way of restoration. Republicans must melt the hearts of Democrats, America must melt the world’s hostility, and each of us must melt the hatred around us. Only then can God dwell in the unity of Cain and Abel, and His Kingdom take root.”

Cain and Abel in Nations: Restoring Unity for America and the World

Moderator: Rev. Sun Myung Moon
Participants: Jesus Christ, Joseph (Genesis), Abraham Lincoln, Martin Luther King Jr., Donald Trump

Opening Question by Rev. Moon:

“Cain and Abel are not only individuals—they are nations, parties, and ideologies. Tell us: how did you experience this struggle on a larger scale?”

Jesus:
“Israel was meant to be Abel for the world, yet pride turned it into Cain. I came to unite Jew and Gentile, but division delayed God’s Kingdom.”

Joseph:
“I became a bridge between Israel and Egypt. God placed me in a foreign land to save not only my family, but entire nations.”

Lincoln:
“In America, North and South were Cain and Abel. My mission was to restore them into one Union, so the nation could survive.”

King:
“My struggle was not only for Black and White, but for America’s soul. The nation itself was Cain and Abel, and needed reconciliation.”

Trump:
“Today, the parties are Cain and Abel. My fight is not only about Republicans, but about restoring the nation as one under God.”

Second Question by Rev. Moon:

“When Cain and Abel exist as nations or parties, hostility becomes even greater. How did you guide unity on this larger level?”

Jesus:
“I taught the Kingdom of God. A vision larger than tribe or nation calls Cain and Abel into one family under the Father.”

Joseph:
“I used my authority to feed both Egyptians and Hebrews. Serving both sides equally opened the way for peace.”

Lincoln:
“I called for reconciliation, not revenge. By appealing to shared destiny, I sought to rebuild a wounded nation.”

King:
“I appealed to America’s founding promise. By reminding the nation of its ideals, I sought unity beyond race or party.”

Trump:
“I lead by standing for all Americans. Even when attacked, I fight for the country as a whole, not just one side.”

Third Question by Rev. Moon:

“Then, for today’s world, what must Abel-type nations and leaders do to bring restoration on a global scale?”

Jesus:
“Preach forgiveness to the nations. The Kingdom comes when nations forgive and reconcile, just as individuals must.”

Joseph:
“Provide for the world’s needs. Hunger, poverty, and fear must be met by Abel nations to melt hostility.”

Lincoln:
“Lead with mercy and justice together. Abel nations must not dominate, but guide with humility.”

King:
“Lift up universal love. True leadership must embrace all races, nations, and peoples as one family.”

Trump:
“Put God first in national life. If America stays true to God, it can guide the world as an Abel nation.”

Closing Reflection by Rev. Moon:

“Yes. National restoration requires Abel nations and leaders to love Cain nations, not dominate them. America must be Abel, not for itself, but for the world. Republicans must love Democrats, America must love even its enemies, and all nations must learn to live as one family under God. Only then can the dream of the Kingdom of Heaven on earth be realized.”

Final Thoughts

Cain and Abel are not just brothers of the past. They are alive in every family, in every nation, in every struggle between parties. Today in America, Republicans stand in the Abel position, and Democrats in the Cain position. But remember: Abel does not exist for himself. Abel exists for Cain.

If Republicans use their position only to dominate, they will lose their Abel calling. But if they love Democrats—serving, forgiving, and sacrificing—then God can work. Cain’s hostility will melt, and unity will be born.

This is not easy. Abel is always struck first. But through endurance and love, Abel restores both himself and Cain. This is how the story of Cain and Abel, repeated through history, can finally end in victory.

For America to heal, for Republicans and Democrats to unite, the path is clear: Abel must love Cain. Only then will this nation become one family under God, and the dream of Heaven on earth begin to shine.
