Jaron Lanier: I think what we’re seeing is a fundamental shift in how humans relate to technology and each other. This competition is driving AI innovation at an incredible pace, but it’s also widening the economic gap between those who can afford to invest in AI and those who cannot. The future of the global economy will hinge on how we manage these disparities and whether we can foster international cooperation around AI to ensure that its benefits are distributed more equally.
Nick Sasaki: Erik, you’ve written extensively about the impact of automation on the workforce. What are your thoughts on the potential for mass unemployment due to AI, and how can we mitigate these risks?

One possible solution is to tax the profits of companies that benefit from AI and redistribute that wealth through social safety nets or universal basic income programs. We also need to strengthen regulations on data privacy and antitrust laws to prevent monopolies from forming in the AI space.

Nick Sasaki: Welcome to our final topic of the conversation: how technology is reshaping our understanding of human life, consciousness, happiness, and creativity. In an age where AI and biotechnology are advancing rapidly, what it means to be human is evolving. Yuval, you’ve written extensively on these subjects. How do you see technology redefining human life, and where does consciousness fit in this new paradigm?
Yuval Noah Harari: Thanks, Nick. I think the most profound question in the 21st century is how technology will affect our understanding of consciousness and identity. Throughout history, we’ve defined ourselves by our biological and cognitive limitations, but with advances in AI and biotech, those limitations are being challenged. Consciousness, which has traditionally been seen as uniquely human, may no longer be exclusive to humans if we manage to create machines that simulate—or even replicate—conscious experiences. AI may never have emotions or self-awareness in the way we do, but that won’t stop us from interacting with AI as though it does, which will raise ethical and philosophical questions about the nature of consciousness. As for human happiness and creativity, we must ask whether these technological advances will truly enhance our well-being or whether they’ll create new forms of alienation and discontent.
Nick Sasaki: David, as a philosopher of consciousness, you’ve explored the relationship between technology and the mind. Do you think AI could ever achieve something akin to consciousness, and how does that challenge our current understanding of life?
David Chalmers: That’s the million-dollar question, Nick. AI has made remarkable progress in mimicking intelligent behavior, but consciousness is a much more complex phenomenon. Consciousness involves subjective experience—what it feels like to be someone or something. AI can process information, recognize patterns, and even engage in conversation, but there’s no evidence yet that AI systems have subjective experiences. However, even if AI doesn’t achieve consciousness, the growing complexity of our interactions with machines may still force us to reconsider the boundaries of consciousness. For example, if an AI could convincingly simulate emotions and empathy, it might blur the lines between what we consider "conscious" beings and mere tools. This raises ethical questions about how we treat advanced AI systems and what rights, if any, they might have.
Nick Sasaki: Esther, your work focuses on human relationships and happiness. In a world increasingly dominated by technology, how do you think human connections and happiness will be affected? Can technology enhance emotional well-being, or are we at risk of losing something essential?
Esther Perel: Technology is a double-edged sword when it comes to human relationships and happiness. On the one hand, it has allowed us to connect with people across the globe, creating new forms of intimacy and interaction. On the other hand, it’s also creating new challenges. We’ve become more distracted and less present, constantly engaging with devices rather than the people in front of us. Relationships are built on presence, empathy, and shared experiences—things that technology, for all its advantages, can sometimes diminish. While apps and AI might help us navigate relationships or even improve emotional intelligence, they can’t replace the deep, meaningful connections we form through shared, embodied experiences. To maintain happiness in a tech-driven world, we need to strike a balance between digital interactions and real-life human connections.
Nick Sasaki: Mihaly, your concept of "Flow" has been influential in understanding human creativity and fulfillment. How do you think AI and automation will impact our ability to achieve flow states in work and life?
Mihaly Csikszentmihalyi: The concept of "Flow" is about being fully immersed in an activity, where your skills meet a challenge and you experience a sense of control and enjoyment. While AI might take over many routine tasks, it can also create opportunities for people to engage in more creative and fulfilling work. The problem is that if people are not given opportunities to develop skills that allow them to enter a flow state, they may feel disconnected or unfulfilled. The challenge with AI and automation is ensuring that humans continue to have meaningful roles in society. If we create a world where people no longer feel challenged or needed, we could see a decline in overall well-being and happiness. But if we use AI to free up time and mental energy for creative and meaningful activities, it could enhance our ability to experience flow.
Nick Sasaki: Sam, you’ve explored the nature of consciousness and happiness through both a scientific and spiritual lens. How do you think the pursuit of happiness will change as we merge more with technology? Will technological enhancements bring us closer to happiness, or could they complicate the pursuit?
Sam Harris: I think the pursuit of happiness is going to become more complicated as we become more integrated with technology. We often mistake external achievements or enhancements—whether they’re material, intellectual, or biological—for the key to happiness, but true well-being comes from within. Technology might provide us with more comfort, more control over our environment, and even physical and cognitive enhancements, but if we don’t address the fundamental nature of the mind, these external changes won’t necessarily make us happier. In fact, they could lead to more anxiety and dissatisfaction if we’re constantly seeking the next upgrade or improvement. Practices like mindfulness and meditation will be even more important in the future, helping people ground themselves and find contentment in the present moment, rather than in the endless pursuit of technological solutions to happiness.
Nick Sasaki: Yuval, given what the others have shared, how do you think technology will affect our sense of meaning and purpose in the future?
Yuval Noah Harari: One of the biggest challenges humanity will face in the coming decades is finding meaning in a world dominated by technology. For centuries, people have found purpose through work, religion, and social connections, but AI and automation could disrupt all of these. If machines take over most of the tasks that give people a sense of purpose, we’ll need to rethink how we derive meaning in life. There’s also the possibility that AI itself could influence our sense of meaning—by curating our experiences, shaping our decisions, or even offering new forms of spirituality. The danger is that we could lose control over our own narratives. But on the flip side, if we manage this transition carefully, technology could also open up new avenues for creativity, exploration, and self-expression, giving people more freedom to pursue what makes them truly happy.
Nick Sasaki: It sounds like the future of human life and consciousness will be deeply shaped by how we use technology, but it’s clear that maintaining balance and awareness will be key to ensuring that it enhances rather than diminishes our experience of life.
