If only the wealthy can afford to become “Homo Deus,” then we’re looking at a future where a new elite class emerges, leaving the rest of humanity behind. Also, we need to think about the ethics of genetic engineering—do we have the right to design our children, not just to eliminate diseases, but to enhance their intelligence or physical capabilities? In a worst-case scenario, AI could make decisions that are detrimental to humans, either through negligence or intentional programming. That’s why I’ve been advocating for strong regulation and oversight from the start. We need to make sure that AI is developed in a way that prioritizes human safety and values. Right now, AI is being used for narrow tasks—self-driving cars, language translation, and even decision-making in industries—but as it becomes more powerful, it could start replacing jobs, or even entire industries, leading to massive economic disruption.

Jaron Lanier: Dataism is a dangerous ideology because it reduces human beings to numbers. We are not just data points—we are conscious, emotional beings with depth that can’t be captured by an algorithm. When we allow data to dictate our lives, we give up what makes us human. The ability to enhance human intelligence, strength, or even lifespan might be accessible only to the wealthy, creating a new kind of class divide—between enhanced and non-enhanced humans. This could lead to a new elite, where those who can afford enhancements gain significant advantages over others in terms of education, employment, and even basic social mobility. The ethical questions are profound: Should we have the right to modify human nature? How do we ensure equal access to these technologies? And what happens to those who are left behind? We need to think carefully about regulation, accessibility, and the unintended consequences of playing with the fundamental aspects of human biology.

I think the first step is to create a global framework for AI ethics and safety. This means governments, tech companies, and ethicists must work together to establish guidelines on AI development.
