This can significantly boost productivity and food security. In healthcare, AI can help extend the reach of services, particularly in rural areas where access to doctors and medical equipment is limited. However, it’s crucial that governments and international organizations work together to ensure that AI infrastructure is in place and that there are policies to protect workers whose jobs might be displaced by automation. It’s also about empowering local innovators and businesses to develop AI solutions that are tailored to the unique challenges of their regions.

Dario Amodei: One of the biggest challenges is ensuring that AI’s benefits are shared equitably. Dario Amodei: Thanks, Nick. AI has the potential to reshape governance in both positive and negative ways. On the one hand, AI can improve efficiency in government operations, help with better decision-making through data analysis, and even enhance public services by making them more accessible. However, the risks are significant. If AI falls into the hands of authoritarian regimes, it could be used for mass surveillance, manipulation, and control. There’s a fine line between using AI to strengthen democracy and using it to undermine it. The future of governance in the AI era will depend largely on how we handle this balance—ensuring that democratic values are protected while leveraging AI for societal good.
Nick Sasaki: That’s an important concern. Yuval, you’ve written extensively on the impact of technology on society. How do you see AI affecting the balance between democracy and authoritarianism?
Yuval Noah Harari: I believe AI is one of the most disruptive technologies humanity has ever created, and it will have profound consequences for governance and politics. AI could empower authoritarian regimes by giving them unprecedented tools for surveillance, censorship, and manipulation. Imagine a government using AI to monitor all online communications, track citizens' movements, and even predict dissent before it happens. This would be a nightmare for democracy. At the same time, AI could strengthen democratic institutions by improving transparency, enhancing civic participation, and providing tools to combat misinformation. The key is how societies choose to use this technology. We need global cooperation to ensure that AI serves the interests of humanity rather than a small group of elites or authoritarian regimes.
Nick Sasaki: Samantha, as someone who has been at the forefront of diplomacy and governance, what role do you think AI will play in global peace and international relations?
Samantha Power: AI could be a double-edged sword when it comes to global peace. Shoshana Zuboff: AI poses a serious threat to individual privacy and freedoms, particularly when deployed in the service of surveillance capitalism. In democratic countries, we’re already seeing AI being used by tech companies to harvest vast amounts of personal data, often without individuals' full understanding or consent. This data is then used for targeted advertising, influencing consumer behavior, and, more dangerously, influencing political choices. In authoritarian regimes, this surveillance infrastructure can be weaponized to control populations, suppress dissent, and monitor every aspect of daily life. The risk is that even democracies will adopt more authoritarian measures if they feel threatened, leading to a slow erosion of individual rights. We must push for stronger regulations to protect personal data and prevent AI from becoming a tool of oppression.
Nick Sasaki: Francis, you’ve written about the challenges facing democracy in the modern era. How do you see AI influencing the global political landscape, particularly in the context of democratic governance?
Francis Fukuyama: AI will undoubtedly have a profound impact on the global political landscape. One of the key issues is that AI’s power to influence and manipulate information can undermine the very foundation of democracy: free and fair elections. We’ve already seen how social media algorithms driven by AI can spread misinformation and deepen political polarization. If left unchecked, AI could exacerbate these problems, making it harder for democracies to function. On the other hand, AI can also be used to strengthen democracy by improving voter participation, enhancing government transparency, and making policymaking more data-driven and accountable. The challenge is ensuring that democratic institutions remain resilient in the face of these new technologies. International cooperation and domestic regulations will be crucial in preserving the integrity of democratic governance in the AI era.
Nick Sasaki: That’s a powerful point. Dario, given the concerns raised about surveillance, manipulation, and potential authoritarian use of AI, how do you think we can safeguard democracy while still leveraging AI’s benefits?
Dario Amodei: It’s a difficult challenge, but one that’s not impossible to address. First, we need global agreements on AI governance—clear rules about how AI should be used by governments and corporations, especially when it comes to surveillance and data privacy. We also need more transparency from AI developers and companies about how their systems work and how they’re being used. Democratic governments must lead by example, using AI to improve public services and protect freedoms while resisting the temptation to overreach. Civil society also plays a crucial role in holding both governments and tech companies accountable. If we can create a system where AI is used ethically and transparently, we can preserve and even strengthen democratic institutions.
Nick Sasaki: Yuval, do you think global cooperation on AI governance is realistic, given the current geopolitical tensions?
Yuval Noah Harari: It’s difficult, but it’s necessary. Without global cooperation, we run the risk of an AI arms race where countries compete to develop the most powerful AI systems, without regard for the consequences. This could lead to more authoritarianism, more conflict, and less democracy. The alternative is to work together to create a global framework for AI that prioritizes human rights and democratic values. It won’t be easy, especially with countries like China and Russia pursuing their own AI agendas. But if the world’s democracies unite and take the lead, they can set the standards for how AI should be developed and deployed. It’s a matter of collective will.
Nick Sasaki: Samantha, how do you see international organizations like the UN playing a role in regulating AI to ensure global peace and prevent authoritarian abuses?
Samantha Power: International organizations have a crucial role to play, but they need to be more agile and forward-thinking. The UN, for example, could help establish global norms and treaties around AI, similar to how it has approached nuclear weapons and chemical warfare. These treaties would need to address not only the military use of AI but also its application in surveillance and governance. Additionally, organizations like the UN should promote transparency and information sharing between countries, ensuring that AI technologies are used for peace and development rather than conflict and control. Nick Sasaki: Shoshana, considering your concerns about surveillance capitalism, what can be done to ensure that AI doesn’t erode individual freedoms?

How will people find meaning in a world where machines do much of the work? Dario, let’s start with you. How do you see AI impacting the future of work?
Dario Amodei: Thanks, Nick. AI is certainly going to transform work, but how it does so will depend largely on how we approach the transition. AI will automate many tasks, especially repetitive and data-driven jobs. This could be seen as a threat to employment, but it’s also an opportunity. With the right policies, AI could free people from mundane work and allow them to focus on more creative, fulfilling tasks. That said, the displacement of jobs is a real concern, especially in industries that rely heavily on manual labor or routine cognitive tasks. We need to think about how to retrain workers, create new types of jobs, and ensure that people don’t fall through the cracks during this transition.
Nick Sasaki: Yuval, you’ve written about the future of work and the existential questions it raises. What do you think happens to the concept of work when AI becomes capable of performing most tasks?
Yuval Noah Harari: I think the rise of AI will force us to rethink the entire concept of work. For most of human history, work has been tied to survival—people worked to produce food, build shelter, and create wealth. But as AI takes over more and more tasks, human labor may become less essential in economic terms. This could lead to a situation where large portions of the population are no longer needed for traditional economic activities. The question then becomes: what do people do with their time, and how do they find meaning in a world where work is no longer central to their identity? Nick Sasaki: That’s a profound point. Andrew, you’ve been advocating for policies like Universal Basic Income (UBI) as a solution to the displacement of jobs by automation. How do you see UBI fitting into the future of work, and how can it help address some of the challenges Yuval just raised?
Andrew Yang: UBI is one of the most practical ways to address the economic disruption caused by AI and automation. As machines take over more jobs, we’re going to see widespread displacement, especially in industries like manufacturing, retail, and transportation. A Universal Basic Income would provide a safety net for people, giving them the financial stability to transition to new types of work or even pursue passions and creative endeavors that don’t necessarily generate income. But UBI isn’t just about money—it’s about giving people the freedom to redefine work. In a post-AI world, work could become more about what brings people fulfillment rather than just survival. It’s about enabling people to contribute to society in ways that aren’t tied to traditional jobs, whether that’s through art, caregiving, education, or community-building.
Nick Sasaki: Marianne, as someone who focuses on personal fulfillment and spiritual growth, how do you see AI affecting people’s sense of purpose in a world where many traditional jobs might disappear?
Marianne Williamson: AI’s rise presents both a challenge and an opportunity for human consciousness. The challenge is that many people define themselves through their work—what they do, how much they earn, their societal role. If those external structures disappear, people might struggle with feelings of purposelessness or disconnection. But this is also an opportunity for a deeper shift in how we define meaning. If AI frees us from many of the mundane tasks we associate with survival, it could also free us to explore our inner lives, our relationships, and our creative potential. We may need to cultivate a new sense of purpose, one that’s based not on external achievements but on inner fulfillment—on love, connection, and the contribution we can make to the well-being of others.
Nick Sasaki: Dario, hearing from everyone, it’s clear that while AI will disrupt the job market, there’s also the potential for a societal transformation. How do you think we can manage this transition effectively, ensuring that people don’t lose their sense of purpose in the process?
Dario Amodei: Managing this transition will require a combination of technological, social, and political solutions. From a technological perspective, we need to develop AI in ways that complement human work rather than replace it entirely. AI should be used to augment human creativity and productivity. On the social side, we need to invest in education and retraining programs that prepare people for the jobs of the future—jobs that may not even exist yet. Politically, policies like UBI, as Andrew mentioned, can help provide stability during this transition. But beyond the economic aspects, we need to have conversations about meaning and fulfillment, as Marianne pointed out. People need opportunities to explore creative, emotional, and social aspects of their lives. AI can give us the space to do that if we approach it with intention.
Nick Sasaki: Andrew, do you think societies are ready to implement policies like UBI on a large scale, and what would the challenges be?
Andrew Yang: I think some societies are more ready than others, but we’re starting to see more openness to ideas like UBI. The COVID-19 pandemic accelerated this shift—suddenly, governments around the world were giving direct financial aid to citizens, which is essentially a temporary version of UBI. The biggest challenges are political and cultural. Many people are still attached to the idea that work should be the primary way we contribute to society and earn our living. Changing that mindset will take time. There’s also the challenge of funding UBI sustainably. But I believe these are solvable problems, especially if we frame UBI as an investment in human potential rather than just a safety net. The key is to start small, with pilot programs, and scale from there as we see the benefits.
Nick Sasaki: Yuval, do you think that as AI takes over more jobs, societies will need to redefine success and fulfillment beyond economic productivity?
Yuval Noah Harari: Absolutely. For thousands of years, we’ve been conditioned to equate success with economic productivity—how much we earn, how much we produce, how much we contribute to the economy. But in a post-AI world, where machines can do most of the economic work, we’ll need to find new ways to measure success. This could be through creative expression, personal relationships, or spiritual growth. It might even lead to a new kind of society, where human well-being is valued more than economic output. This transition will be challenging, though, because it requires a fundamental shift in how we think about life, work, and purpose. But it’s also an opportunity for a more fulfilling and humane society.
