The Power of Commitment and Purpose
Lynne Twist (Moderator):
"Welcome, everyone. Today, we’re exploring the transformative power of commitment and purpose. I’m thrilled to have this incredible group of changemakers with us: Jane Goodall, Nelson Mandela, Jacinda Ardern, and Desmond Tutu. Let’s begin by understanding how commitment has shaped your journeys. Jane, can you share how committing to conservation became your life’s purpose?"
Jane Goodall:
"Thank you, Lynne. Commitment is the foundation of everything I’ve done. It started as a passion for animals, but over time, it transformed into a deep responsibility to protect the environment. There were many challenges—skepticism from peers, lack of resources—but saying ‘yes’ to this purpose gave me resilience. When you’re truly committed, obstacles become stepping stones. Purpose keeps you going when the odds are against you."
Lynne Twist:
"Beautifully said, Jane. Commitment truly transforms challenges into opportunities. Nelson, your journey as a freedom fighter and leader during apartheid exemplifies this. How did your purpose sustain you during your years of imprisonment?"
Nelson Mandela:
"Purpose was my compass, Lynne. Prison tested my resolve, but I realized that I was not alone in this fight. My commitment to justice gave me a sense of inner freedom. Even in isolation, I could see how every small step—every moment of resilience—was part of a larger movement. Commitment doesn’t only shape your life; it inspires others to join the cause."
Lynne Twist:
"That’s so powerful, Nelson. Purpose truly aligns your actions with a greater vision. Jacinda, as a leader, how have you maintained your commitment to kindness and collective well-being, even under immense pressure?"
Jacinda Ardern:
"Lynne, leadership is always challenging, but aligning your work with a larger purpose makes the journey meaningful. My commitment to kindness has been my guide. It’s not about being perfect; it’s about showing up consistently with compassion. I often say that small acts of kindness create ripple effects. When I’ve faced tough decisions, staying true to this commitment has kept me grounded."
Lynne Twist:
"Thank you, Jacinda. It’s inspiring to hear how staying aligned with values creates clarity in action. Desmond, your work in peace and reconciliation was groundbreaking. How did your commitment to these ideals help you in moments of adversity?"
Desmond Tutu:
"Commitment to peace and reconciliation is deeply spiritual. It’s rooted in love and interconnectedness. Choosing forgiveness over resentment was not easy, but it was necessary. I often say that reconciliation is not about forgetting but about creating a future where we can coexist. Commitment to this vision transformed the way I saw conflict—not as something to avoid, but as an opportunity to build something better."
Lynne Twist:
"Such profound wisdom, Desmond. It’s remarkable how commitment transforms adversity into growth. To bring this full circle, I’d love for each of you to share a piece of advice for someone seeking to commit to a larger purpose."
Jane Goodall:
"Follow your passion and let it evolve into a commitment. Start small—every action counts and can lead to something greater."
Nelson Mandela:
"Never underestimate the power of hope. Even in the darkest times, purpose can light the way."
Jacinda Ardern:
"Lead with kindness. Consistent, small acts aligned with your values create meaningful change."
Desmond Tutu:
"Remember, we are all interconnected. Commit to uplifting others, and you will find fulfillment beyond measure."
Lynne Twist:
"Thank you all for sharing your incredible journeys. Your lives are living proof of the transformative power of commitment and purpose. To everyone listening, may we all find the courage to step into a purpose larger than ourselves."
Living from Sufficiency and Abundance
Lynne Twist (Moderator):
"Welcome back, everyone. Today, we’re exploring the profound shift from scarcity to sufficiency and how abundance emerges when we align with a purpose. Joining me are Wangari Maathai, Sue Morter, Eckhart Tolle, and Joseph Stiglitz. Let’s begin by talking about sufficiency. Wangari, your work with the Green Belt Movement exemplified living in harmony with nature. How did sufficiency guide your approach?"
Wangari Maathai:
"Thank you, Lynne. The idea of sufficiency was central to my work. We didn’t have large-scale resources when we started planting trees, but we had enough. I realized that by nurturing what we already had—our knowledge, our communities, and our connection to the land—we could achieve abundance. Sufficiency is about seeing the value in what’s present and building from there."
Lynne Twist:
"That’s such a powerful perspective, Wangari. Seeing sufficiency as a foundation for abundance is transformative. Sue, your work focuses on energy and alignment. How do you see sufficiency and abundance as interconnected?"
Sue Morter:
"Sufficiency is a state of mind. When we focus on what’s lacking, we cut ourselves off from the energy of abundance. When we see life through the lens of ‘enough,’ we align with a natural flow that brings more into our lives. Abundance isn’t just material wealth; it’s the richness of connection, creativity, and purpose that arises when we shift our mindset."
Lynne Twist:
"Absolutely, Sue. It’s incredible how our perspective shapes what we experience. Eckhart, you often talk about presence. How does living in the present moment contribute to sufficiency and abundance?"
Eckhart Tolle:
"Lynne, sufficiency exists in the now. Scarcity arises when we project fears into the future or dwell on the past. The present moment contains everything we need to feel abundant. When we’re fully present, we see that the richness of life isn’t dependent on external circumstances but on our state of being. Abundance is a natural outcome of living in alignment with the present."
Lynne Twist:
"Beautifully said, Eckhart. The present moment truly is a gateway to abundance. Joseph, as an economist, how does this idea of sufficiency translate on a larger scale in terms of global resources?"
Joseph Stiglitz:
"Sufficiency challenges the idea that economic growth must come at the expense of others or the planet. The Earth provides enough for everyone if resources are distributed equitably and sustainably. The key is to focus on collaboration and shared prosperity rather than competition and excess. Sufficiency is not about limiting ourselves; it’s about using resources wisely to create abundance for all."
Lynne Twist:
"That’s such an important point, Joseph. Sufficiency is about balance and fairness, not limitation. To tie this together, I’d like to ask each of you how abundance has manifested in your lives through the practice of sufficiency."
Wangari Maathai:
"Abundance came through community. Planting one tree led to millions, and with that came restored land, food security, and empowerment for women."
Sue Morter:
"Abundance shows up as alignment—when I honor what I have, opportunities flow effortlessly."
Eckhart Tolle:
"Abundance is the peace and joy I feel in the present. It doesn’t depend on external success but on inner alignment."
Joseph Stiglitz:
"Abundance is shared prosperity. When we shift from greed to collaboration, we create more than enough for everyone."
Lynne Twist:
"Thank you all for sharing these profound insights. Sufficiency is not just about having enough—it’s about recognizing the potential in what we already have and building a future of abundance. To everyone listening, may we learn to live in alignment with sufficiency and create a world where everyone thrives."
Action, Contribution, and Impact

Lynne Twist (Moderator):
"Welcome back to our series on Living a Committed Life. Today, we’ll explore how small, intentional actions lead to meaningful impact. I’m honored to have Muhammad Yunus, Malala Yousafzai, Brené Brown, and Jimmy Carter here to share their insights. Let’s begin with you, Muhammad. Your work with microfinance revolutionized the way we approach poverty alleviation. How did small actions create such a significant ripple effect?"
Muhammad Yunus:
"Thank you, Lynne. When I started Grameen Bank, it wasn’t about solving global poverty overnight. It began with a simple idea: giving small loans to empower individuals. I saw how one small loan could transform not only a person’s life but also their family and community. Small actions, when rooted in a clear purpose, create ripples that grow into waves of change."
Lynne Twist:
"That’s incredible, Muhammad. Your story truly shows the power of small actions. Malala, your journey began with small but brave steps—speaking out for education. How did these actions grow into a global movement?"
Malala Yousafzai:
"Thank you, Lynne. My activism began with a simple desire: to go to school and for other girls to do the same. Writing a blog, speaking in my community—these were small steps, but they were driven by purpose. Over time, others joined me, and the movement grew. Contribution starts with believing that your voice matters, even when it feels small."
Lynne Twist:
"Your courage is inspiring, Malala. Brené, your research on vulnerability and courage has transformed how people see themselves and their relationships. How does contributing to others' well-being fulfill us personally?"
Brené Brown:
"Lynne, contribution and connection are deeply tied to fulfillment. When we step into vulnerability and serve others, we experience a sense of belonging and purpose. Leadership through service is powerful because it transforms both the giver and the receiver. Contribution doesn’t require perfection; it requires authenticity and courage."
Lynne Twist:
"Beautifully said, Brené. Contribution as a two-way transformation is such a powerful idea. Jimmy, your life after the presidency is a testament to living your legacy. What motivates you to keep giving back?"
Jimmy Carter:
"Lynne, I believe that legacy isn’t something you leave behind—it’s something you live every day. My work with Habitat for Humanity and other initiatives is driven by the idea that small, consistent contributions can change lives. Fulfillment comes from knowing that you’ve made a positive difference, no matter how small."
Lynne Twist:
"Thank you, Jimmy. Living your legacy every day is such a profound concept. To close, I’d love for each of you to share advice for those who want to take impactful actions but feel unsure about where to start."
Muhammad Yunus:
"Start with one step, no matter how small. When aligned with purpose, even tiny actions can lead to big changes."
Malala Yousafzai:
"Believe in your voice and your power. Small acts of courage can inspire others to join you."
Brené Brown:
"Be authentic. Contribution doesn’t require perfection; it requires showing up with your whole self."
Jimmy Carter:
"Focus on consistency. Every small act builds toward something greater over time."
Lynne Twist:
"Thank you all for your inspiring words. Today’s conversation reminds us that impactful contributions start with small, intentional actions aligned with purpose. Let’s each commit to taking one small step toward a better world."
Growth Beyond Comfort Zones
Lynne Twist (Moderator):
"Welcome to today’s conversation about growth and the challenges that take us beyond our comfort zones. Joining me are Ruth Bader Ginsburg, Iyanla Vanzant, Elon Musk, and Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie. Together, we’ll explore how stepping into discomfort and facing adversity lead to profound transformation. Ruth, you dedicated your life to breaking barriers in law and gender equality. How did stepping beyond comfort zones shape your journey?"
Ruth Bader Ginsburg:
"Thank you, Lynne. Growth always requires stepping into the unknown. In my career, I often faced skepticism and resistance, but I saw those challenges as opportunities to make progress. Whether it was arguing cases before the Supreme Court or balancing work and family life, I realized that discomfort is where change begins. You can’t create meaningful impact by staying in a safe space."
Lynne Twist:
"Such wisdom, Ruth. Discomfort truly is a catalyst for change. Iyanla, your journey of personal transformation and helping others heal is remarkable. How has stepping beyond comfort zones played a role in your growth?"
Iyanla Vanzant:
"Lynne, growth is impossible without discomfort. For me, the turning points in my life—whether it was facing personal failures or rebuilding from scratch—required courage and faith. Love has been my driving force in those moments. When you choose love over fear, you expand your capacity to overcome adversity and create something beautiful from the chaos."
Lynne Twist:
"Thank you, Iyanla. Love as a driving force is such a powerful idea. Elon, your work pushes boundaries in innovation. How has stepping into discomfort fueled your vision for the future?"
Elon Musk:
"Discomfort is where the magic happens. When I started SpaceX, most people thought it was a fool’s errand, and failure seemed inevitable. But taking risks and embracing discomfort allowed us to innovate and achieve what once seemed impossible. Growth isn’t linear—it’s messy, unpredictable, and often uncomfortable, but that’s where breakthroughs happen."
Lynne Twist:
"Your perspective on risk and growth is inspiring, Elon. Chimamanda, your storytelling often challenges societal norms and sparks difficult conversations. How does discomfort play a role in your creative process?"
Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie:
"Discomfort is essential to storytelling. The most powerful stories come from confronting difficult truths—about ourselves, our communities, and the world. Writing is often uncomfortable because it forces you to be vulnerable, but that vulnerability is where authenticity and connection are born. Growth, whether in art or life, demands that we face the things we’d rather avoid."
Lynne Twist:
"Such profound insights, Chimamanda. Growth is indeed about vulnerability and courage. To close, I’d love for each of you to share advice for those hesitant to step out of their comfort zones."
Ruth Bader Ginsburg:
"Don’t fear resistance—it’s a sign that you’re on the path to progress. Embrace it and let it guide you."
Iyanla Vanzant:
"Choose love over fear. When you act from love, you find the strength to overcome anything."
Elon Musk:
"Take risks, and don’t be afraid to fail. Failure is simply a step toward success."
Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie:
"Be vulnerable. The discomfort you feel is the beginning of something meaningful and authentic."
Lynne Twist:
"Thank you all for your incredible wisdom. Growth truly comes from embracing the challenges that stretch us beyond our comfort zones. To everyone listening, may we all find the courage to step into discomfort and create something extraordinary."
The Call of Interconnection and Collaboration
Lynne Twist (Moderator):
"Welcome, everyone. Today’s conversation centers on the call of interconnection and collaboration, a theme deeply woven into Living a Committed Life. I’m joined by the Dalai Lama, Mother Teresa, Vandana Shiva, and Satish Kumar—visionaries whose work reflects the profound impact of working together for the greater good. Let’s start with you, Dalai Lama. How has the idea of interconnection guided your efforts for global peace and harmony?"
Dalai Lama:
"Thank you, Lynne. Interconnection is the essence of our shared humanity. When we see ourselves as part of a larger whole, we naturally feel compassion for others. My work for peace begins with cultivating this understanding. True happiness comes not from focusing on oneself but from contributing to the well-being of others. Collaboration, rooted in this perspective, creates a better world for all."
Lynne Twist:
"Such a beautiful perspective, Dalai Lama. Compassion truly emerges when we recognize our interdependence. Mother Teresa, your life was dedicated to serving the poorest of the poor. How did interconnection shape your mission?"
Mother Teresa:
"Lynne, I always saw Christ in the faces of those I served. This sense of oneness gave me the strength to continue, even in the most difficult times. We are all part of the same family, and when we care for each other, we create a chain of love. Interconnection is not just a concept—it’s a call to action to serve with humility and devotion."
Lynne Twist:
"Thank you, Mother Teresa. Love and service truly bring interconnection to life. Vandana, your work in sustainability and ecological harmony demonstrates collaboration on a global scale. How has interconnection influenced your activism?"
Vandana Shiva:
"Lynne, interconnection is the foundation of nature itself. Every living system is interconnected, and human life depends on these relationships. My activism began with protecting seeds—tiny but powerful symbols of life and connection. Collaboration between farmers, communities, and ecosystems is essential for sustainability. When we honor interconnection, we create abundance for all."
Lynne Twist:
"Your work beautifully demonstrates the power of collaboration, Vandana. Satish, your teachings on simplicity and harmony with nature reflect deep interconnection. How do you see collaboration as a force for positive change?"
Satish Kumar:
"Lynne, collaboration is about living in harmony—with ourselves, with others, and with the Earth. In my work, I emphasize simplicity because it brings us closer to what truly matters: our relationships. When we collaborate, we tap into the collective wisdom of humanity and nature. This interconnectedness allows us to solve even the greatest challenges together."
Lynne Twist:
"Such powerful insights, Satish. To bring this full circle, I’d love to hear your advice for those seeking to embrace interconnection and collaboration in their own lives."
Dalai Lama:
"Start with compassion. When you care for others, you naturally build connections that lead to collaboration."
Mother Teresa:
"Serve with humility. When we love one another, we become instruments of peace."
Vandana Shiva:
"Honor the relationships in nature. Collaboration begins when we see the Earth as a partner, not a resource."
Satish Kumar:
"Live simply and mindfully. Interconnection flourishes when we create space for it to grow."
Lynne Twist:
"Thank you all for these profound words. Interconnection and collaboration remind us that we are not alone in this journey. Together, we can create a world where everyone thrives. To everyone listening, let’s embrace our shared humanity and take collective action for a brighter future."
